people remove the tabs from soda/beer cans to give to charities and such.

They aren't. Go to www.snopes.com for details. Some urban legend was going around at one time that you could collect them for charity. It never was true and still isn't.

The tabs themselves are worthless. When tabs are turned in to the charities, the charities turn them in to the soda companies, who have agreed to donate a certain amount of money to that charity for every tab turned in. The tab reflects the purchase of that can of soda. If one purchases soda only from those soda companies who donate to charities by this method, then the soda company makes more money, the charities make more money and the people who rely on the charities benefit.

They are not necessarily valuable. Some groups however have agreed if the people do the work and collect them that they will donate money for dialysis etc. So to a person who needs that I would say they are like gold.
