There are several ways to do this. Some medications are prescribed to reduce high blood pressure...procardia, tenormin, propranylol just to name a few. Some are classified as beta blockers, others as calcium channel blockers. Their classification depends on what purpose they serve in the heart. There are also other ways to do this without medication. Stop smoking, or cut back on your smoking anyway (if you do); exercise more; reduce your salt intake;drink more water; meditate; avoid caffiene. I am only 29 but I have had and still have high blood pressure problems. I brought alot of it on myself, so I am pretty certain that I am the exception, not the rule. Mine can only be controlled with medication. Hopefully this is not the case with your particular situation.

Home treatment is important to help control high blood pressure, especially if you have other risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Even if your doctor has prescribed medication for you, there are still many steps you can take to lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. Changes in lifestyle or behavior can help control high blood pressure and in some cases may allow you to reduce the amount of medication you need.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Get regular exercise.
Avoid using too much sodium.
Get enough potassium, calcium, and magnesium in your diet.
Add fiber to your diet.
Limit alcohol use.
Stop smoking.
Use anti-inflammatory medications wisely.
Learn to check your blood pressure at home.

Loosing weight and lowering sodium intake can help but sometimes this isn't enough and medication is needed. Sometimes something as simple as a diuretic, but work with your doctor because some OTC pills can flush out too much potassium and other minerals that your body needs to function normally.

Eat less salt, lose weight if you're overweight, do some sort of stress relieving exercise (yoga, running, meditation).

I take Atenlol and a water retention pill. It works for me -- both prescriptions of course.
