i keep trying to impress my bf who is an excellent cook but i've always been terrible at cooking and can't put things together right. we end up eating some wierd concoctions and he's very polite but my family hate my cooking too. It's a big joke to all but i get a bit wound up and think of cooking as a martial art. Do you know any really good basic recipe books? nothing fancy or exotic

I'm guessing that your talents as a cook will never be better than your bf's and when it comes to cooking, when your good at it it almost becomes an art form.(That is unless you believe that following pkg. directions and putting a meal together of Hamburger Helper, canned veggies, dinner salad, and sliced bread is cooking) I think you will have more success impressing someone by taking what your comfortable doing and taking it up a notch or two. In English. There must be something that your bf thinks your good at. Use that as a platform to jump from and learn to do it better. I have cooked and baked from scratch ever since I left my parents home. I got better at it when I joined the Navy and made cooking a carreer. I have to say that there are so many people like yourself who are a bit clueless in the kitchen which in my opinion is a good thing because it opens the door for those of us who have a clue and can be appreciated for something we are good at. I would never try to impress a talented singer with a trained voice even though I love to sing. Instead I let them know that they deserve the recognition they recieve because that is something that they are able to do well. Maybe your a good dancer. Just a thought here but it could be used to impress him if you were to maybe improve by perhaps learning pole dancing a then giving him a private show when you have intimate moments. Here is something that may help you identify what impresses your bf. Talk to him and ask, "Honey Bunch, what impresses you?" If his answer can provide you with insight, you will have a more clear idea of whether or not you are able to impress. I don't know how long the two of you have been together but I have been in the same relationship for 16 + years and I have learned that offering genuine Love to someone will go a lot further than trying to impress. Impressing is only a spice, it isn't an ingredient. I hope this helps. Jody

I second the better homes & gardens red & white. I was terrible until I started with that. And watch some stuff like Rachel Ray. Try one thing that your BF doesn't cook, but likes, like a cake or cookies. Get really good at one thing and he will be impressed.

1000 Recipe Cook Book by Isabelle Barrett & Jane Harrop.
This IS basic. Get it from the local library.
Cooking, like all things, takes practise.
Follow the instructions (In Basic cookery) to the 'Letter' and you shouldn't go wrong.
Or, stick to Pot Noodle.

Try some recipes from here before you spend money on a book.

well, i have a simple recipe not a book. It called 'kek batik'. It is a cake. Very delicious and yummmmmmmy!!The ingredients are:
- one roll of coffee biscuits(20-30)
- 1 cup of margerine
-3/4 cup of sugar
-1 cup of coco powder
-1 cup of chocolate/ vanilla powder
- 4 eggs
-1 tin of concentarated/saturated milk
How to make?:
-Mix margerine n' sugar. Of course not with your hand!!
-Add the eggs one by one and stir with the mixture
-Add the coco and chocolate/vanilla powder into the mixture
-Put in the concentrated/saturated milk
-put the final mixture into a pan/pot
-heat it until it becomes thicky and put the chips of the biscuits
that you have 'karate' with your hands into the pan/pot.
- insert the hot n'thicky mixture into a steel container.
-cool it and put into the fridge. Not at the freezing!!
-You can serve it when it is not thicky as you impale the cake
with the toothpicks

I'm not being patronizing, but I remember using the Usborne first cookery book when I was younger and it really helped me learn the basics. Nice food in there actually, still eat some of it now! Never mastered puddings though.

Better homes and gardens, the one you see at the bookstore in the red and white check cover! It's the absolute best for easy, eatable recipes that you'll use over and over again. I got the hardbound one because it's easy to open and use, but for less money, there's a paper bound one available.
