For me this question is so difficult! And I get it often, right next to “Are you shy”? To answer honestly would imply a lot more opening up than I’m willing to do… especially since I get these questions from people I’m just starting to know!

Ya, I get this question too, Why am I shy? Then it dawned on me one day. Its because other people around me are always so talkative that I was never allowed to talk.
And so because they were so talkative I was never given the chance to talk that the talkers made me a shy person, so I never really learned to stand up for my self and become outgoing or out spoken.
And I wanted to just tell the other person to just be quiet and let me talk but they just keep talking and talking and talking. And then the talker's wonder why I was so shy and then I thought to my self well maybe if you just get your Yap shut I could talk some and let you know what I was going thru. And they they wonder why their friendship's don't last very long.
Sorry to be long winded. But wanted to tell you why in detail I was shy, from my point of view. I've learn to over come that by starting to be the first one to talk when I am with friend's/family and then they know that I am more serious about wanting to talk and not be so shy.

The answer is obviously, "yes".
The admission is not especially "open" given that it must have ben obvious to your interlocutor that you are shy for them to ask the question in the first place.

Next time just say, "I'm not shy, I'm reserved and I'm trying to decide if I like you or not!". That will either shut them up or they'll call you a *****. If they call you a ***** then say, "Thank you for noticing. I've been working really hard at it and I was beginning to wonder!".

Tell them 'I am not shy, I just prefer to listen more than talk when I first meet people until I know them better.'

Tell them if they can sincerely get to know you and stick around long enough, they can find out all about you. If they can't, they shouldn't get the prize anyway.
