Shortbread isn't bread...it's a cookie (British biscuit) made with sugar, butter, flour, and a pinch of salt. Mmmmm. Very dense, a little crumbly, very fatty and deeee-licious.

Shortcake...isn't a cake. It's a biscuit (American biscuit), made like a sweet biscuit--it has flour (probably self-rising, or all-purpose flour mixed with salt and baking powder), butter or solid shortening (OK, lard if you must), a little sugar, and a liquid--usually milk, but maybe buttermilk or yogurt. Shortcakes are split in half and filled with sweetened fruit, the usual suspects being berries or peaches. Then, the whole shebang is generally topped with whipped cream. Also deeeee-licious.

Good question!
