what are the disadvantages if one opts for Linux OS instead of Windows XP? But one thing is commendable that this community is working to provide Linux OS software free of charge. They believe that any software should be available free of charges. Have anyone downloaded this OS from http://ubuntu.com, then kindly inform me of your experiences?

I've just started using Ubuntu. It's pretty slick, actually. Of course you wouldn't be able to directly run any Windows applications, though WINE would probably work for some things. It's a whole new world, and it really depends what you want your computer to be good for. If it's just checking email, surfing the web, and editing documents, you don't really need Windows anymore. If it's Half Life 2, though...you probably do.

I'd say give it a try. I completely deleted Windows on the machine I installed it on, but you should be able to run from CD or install as a dual boot.

I have downloaded Ubuntu Linux 6.06 (dapper drake) from the website and installed it on 3 machines. I have had no problems in installing at all. One machine was a 6 year old HP Brio BA500 (P3 500Mhz, 128MB RAM), one is a new Intel Pentium 805D (dual core, 1GB RAM) and another is an Intel Celeron 2.4 (256MB RAM).

The OS installed in 20 minutes on the slowest machine. It detected the hardware of even the most recent machine that featured an Intel 945GNT motherboard (SATA, Onboard ATI GFX accel).

Two issues I faced were:
1. Ubuntu updates itself regularly via the web. However there is no easy way to download the updates on one PC, store them and then apply them on other PCs over the network. The updates need to be downloaded individually for every PC. The updates can get heavy at times (100+MB).
2. Due to a bug in XOrg+GNOME, occasionally the computer will switch to a resolution lower than what your monitor+card can support. The only way to fix this is to login as root and run the configuration program.

Its byfar slicker than even Windows XP and its got features that even Vista doesnt have. Very MacOSX like.

Hi, I'm running Xandros on this pc and it's got loads of good things going for it; free music, image, web and desktop editors, all downloadable with the use of Xandros Networks which is a software browser that downloads and installs any program you choose: 80% success rate, but hey it's free!

I've also got a copy of Knoppix Live cd and as long as you've got bushels of extra memory it rocks...it doesn't seem to worry about relatively slow processor speeds.

The main disadvantage seems to be configuring external hardware although having said that printing has been very straight forward.

By far the coolest stuff seems to be Fluxbox and other miniature os systems; the screen shots look kool but this man has only tried the above.

Have fun.
