Most vets wont charge you when you take them to have their stiches taken out, but my husband has always taken our dogs stiches out when they are ready to come out it took him about 3 min and the dog just layed there.

It is possible to do it yourself if you can get your puppy to sit still. You just need small scissors and tweezers, it's easy, snip and pull BUT, i'm not saying that I have not removed stitches from a pet, don't let your husband sway you. It is of course, safer to take the puppy to the vet and let them do, they usually won't charge you to remove the stitches and if you do take him in it will give the vet a chance to just take a quick peek and make sure that everything looks good. Tell your husband to stop being lazy and cheap and take the dog to the vet, heaven forbid something did happen when you took the stitches out, your husband would feel like the biggest @$$hole in the world and you two would inevitably get in a huge fight AND end up having to take the pup to the vet anyway. Good luck.

You could if you can hold the dog still and you do not cut him with the siccors.
The vet will do it for free. The cost is part of the neutering why not let your vet do it.
It also gives the vet a chance to look over the dog and make sure there is not any infection and that the incision properly healed.

I remove my cat stiches...however I used to work as a vet tech. By now..you should not have to worry about infection..the incision would look red and irratated, and after 2 weeks (normal amount of time for stitches to be in) it should be pretty much as healed as it is going to get. You probably should bring him to the vet if you are concerned, and besides it is free. It is included with your cost of surgery...so why not bring him to the vet to do it. This way you will have peace of mind that his incision is fine.

I have always taken my animals' stitches out and never had a problem.
Take fingernail clippers (safer than scissors) and clip each stitch. Tug the side with the knot gently and the stitch should slide right out.
And once again, I'm surprised at some of the rude answers! If you don't like the question, don't answer it!

Why would you want to? The cost of removal is included in the surgery fee. Better safe than sorry. Why take the chance of causing your pup any unnecessary problem? I think it is also a good chance for the vet to take another post - op look at your pup to make sure all is well.

It's fine. My mom took her dog's stitches out when she had her spayed. She asked the vet about it, and he just said if you're comfortable with it, go ahead. Everything was just fine. People who say, "NO! Don't do it!!" are just being paranoid and apparently have never done anything like that and know nothing about it. There's nothing wrong with taking a dog's stitches out by yourself...

If the wound isn't open or bleeding, i think of he would be ok presented you may sidestep him licking or biting at this section. be sure you have this coated in a fashion that he can no longer get to it and if it might open or start to bleed, you will could take him back to the vet.

No dont take them out yourselves. When the stitches are ready to come out they will fall out on their own. But if you feel that they are ready to come out make sure from the vet first and maybe he or she can remove them for you.

DON'T DO IT yes it may save you money, but just take the puppy to the vet, unlike a person a puppy can't tell you if something hurts or if something doesn't feel right, you don't want to ruin your puppy for the rest of his life, just take the little guy to the vet. its safer and smarter
