I have heard many say it is arrogant for anyone to think that his faith is the only way. First of all, I should say that the Bible clearly reveals we as Christians have nothing to boast about – that is, except God Himself. Thus it is written, "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

Secondly, Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father except by me.” Is it arrogance for one to believe this – especially after experiencing a demonstration of God’s power? Is it not, in fact, humility that leads one to acknowledge that man does not have all the answers, but that God, who reveals Himself to man, might know the way. And so is not man led to trust what he cannot see, that God may open his eyes so he can see – as was the case with the blind man who Jesus healed, as recorded in John, chapter 9. For though he did not know all there was to know about Jesus, when questioned about Him, he responded, “One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”

Its not arrogrance its the truth. How else would we have a direct path to God? Well in order to recieve God you have to do this by Jesus. You have to accept Jesus and believe in Jesus and then in his name you are baptized. Getting baptized and loving and accepting Jesus is the way to heaven and a happy everlasting life.

It's arrogant to assume that your interpretation of scripture is the only possible one. Even by people who accept the Bible as God's word, there are differences of opinion on the interpretation. When Jesus says that nobody comes to the Father except through him, he may mean that Christianity is the only way, or he may mean that when people from all belief systems experience God, they are doing it through in the same way as he is advocating. And such. It's not arrogant to have your beliefs, just to assume everyone else who doesn't share your particular interpretation is wrong.

You seem to be a thoughtful person who is trying to understand why a non Christian might think the statement, "No man comes to the Father except by me," is inherently arrogant. So let's begin with the word itself. According to my Oxford dictionary, it means, "overbearing, presumptuous, and haughty." Out of the three descriptive words given, "presumptuous" could well be the fundamental key to your question. Why?

Human beings by their very nature are creative animals. Nothing delights us more than finding faster and better ways of doing something. We also love discovering entirely new and previously unknown ways of doing something, be it a simple task or a new way to create. Consequently, if you are told that there is only one way to achieve a specific result, it "presumes" that you know absolutely everything about the specific task or subject of study. And, if you personally know of a different way of achieving the same result yet the person continues to insist that this way is the only way and refuses to acknowledge the others point of view, then "overbearing" and "haughty" is the reaction by the other.

It is very difficult for any human being to accept the idea of one way and one way only. And if we all did indeed accept the "one way only" means of doing things, our world and everything in it would not have progressed to the point that it is in now. We would have no computers or this marvelous thing called the Internet whereby we are able to communicate quite literally to anyone in any part of the world. Without it, I wouldn't be answering your question.

There is more than one way to reach spiritual enlightenment just as there is more than one way to make and bake a cake. Consequently, being told you are going to hell because you do not accept the spiritually enlightening path provided by Christianity, is in and of itself, arrogant. It presumes no other path exists. No other means of achieving the same end. And more importantly...

It slams the door and closes the vault on human creativity.

The non-Christians on this board just don't get this -- we say with love that they are wrong, but they insist that we can't tell them that. What seems strange to me is that they come to a site like this and not expect to hear viewpoints that start from absolutes.

Bless them
