Churches and pastors can offer a very one-sided biased approach to the bible. Since the bible can mean so many things apparently to so many people do you just listen to what you hear in church and say "oh yeah, that's what that means." or do you try and interpret for yourself?

This stems from a discussion I had with a Christian about the bible. I would say the bible says xyz and she would argue with me and say "No, it doesn't, where?" So I would give her the passage that it says that in. I asked her why she thought it didn't say xyz when she claims to have read the bible in its entirety. I got the rather lame excuse of "That was a long time ago." Well, this particular xyz was about Lot and his daughters, which is a rather interesting story that is hard to forget. So.... where does your bible knowledge come from really? Don't be ashamed to admit you haven't read it entirely. No one will look down on you.

I have read it through at least 2 times, but I don't remember everything I have read. I was starting on W. Cleon Skousen's "Thousand Year" Bible commentaries, because he spent probably 70 years studying the scriptures and traveling all over the world, including many trips to Israel. The reason I have a tendency to rely on W. Cleon Skousen is because my father actually worked for him, and he was one of my church's pre-eminent scholars. I am also a new fan of Hugh Nibley. I have heard opinions on Bible passages from a variety of Seminary and Institute teachers over the years, as well. However, I have to look up most of the answers I give on this site. I keep stopping to study other things, like theater and country music.

I read more than what we study in Church. I like the 20/20 rule. Read the 20 verses before and after. Can't take it out of context that way.

Besides, there are different versions (translations) for easier understanding. Perhaps you miss-understood or perhaps she miss-understood you.

Everyone judges Christians, ha..ha...ha...even some Christians!

I'm a daily reader of the Bible...and want to keep it that way the rest of my life! I'm currently reading the New Century Version (NCV) translation. It's awesome and has study notes too!

I'm sure there things I have missed and will catch on the next go around!

I have read the Bible from cover to cover probably 5 times now. I do most of my study by sciping around but I have read it in it's entirety. Since I am Mormon I have also read our other scriptures such as the Book of Mormon. Some day I hope to read a translation of the Koran. ( I hope I spelled that right sorry if I didn't) I beleieve that personal study and prayer is the only way to find the truth.

People just memorise a few verses and passages only. They dont feel the need / and or time to read that big book of stories. What astonish me is that those who have read it all, have not found one inconsistency in the bible and strengthened their faith in that book, the only religious book which i have found lots of inconsistencies.

Turn on the tv and lets watch some toony. It makes more sense.

I read the King James version a couple times cover to cover and then read a student bible which will bounce you around through out it to try to create a story line so it makes more sense...I even read the Jehovah's witness version...they are all good works of fiction. Through my readings of the bible, personal life experiences and logical thought, I am an Atheist. =)

I've read the entire thing, in five translations, and taken over twenty college level courses in bible study from three POV's (RC, Baptist, Methodist).

Most of that AFTER I came to my senses and ditched believing in the fairy tale called Yahweh.
