i only swear at work, as im driving home i lose the capacity to swear,,, praps cos im surrounded by idiots all day.

Firstly I use 'off' in the kitchen when it is to finish something. Because I might cook the stuffed chicken breast during prep but then it is left to go cold. I cook it off when it's to be made ready to be presented to the customer. In a kitchen I might be asked 'is this chicken cooked?' and you need to know what exactly you are being asked.

Secondly can I just point out that I am a chef with 9 GCSEs, 3 A levels, a degree in business and marketing and an IQ of 152. I chef because it beats the hell out of boring marketing or banking jobs. Everone thinks cheffing is easy and chefs are thick but everyone loves to eat our food. Running a kitchen takes a lot of skill, you have to be able to cook to a high standard to please very discerning customers, manage a team, think quickly, prioritse, have buying skills, be able to spot trends in ingredients and food preparation, you are repsonsible for the helath of your customers and also responsible for the gross profit of the business you work for. People who work in offices are numpties!

Most chefs are numpties with a very low IQ level. To listen to the majority of them speak is just embarassing at how ill-educated most of them are.

I know what you mean about 'frying off' and 'cooking off'. It's irritating in the extreme. Another favourite chef word is 'basically' which is a horrible, space-filling, pointless word.

I've noticed that. Have you ever heard match anglers talk? They use the definite article before any bait's name. So 'the maggot' and the worm do not refer to a single creature. Also 'the luncheon meat' ? Maybe cooks like to fish?
