A great fighter could be a great martial artist. Pick someone in the MMA, UFC, IFC, etc. They can be both. Think of a great boxer, they are a great fighter, not necessarily a martial artist.
A great fighter wins at fighting. A great martial artist can win at fighting and has other skills related to teaching martial arts, understanding body movement, flow, etc. The fighter just may fight good regardless of theory, form, understanding. Then again, the fighter may understand all of that and really well.
A Marine, Delta Force, Iranian Soldier, Ranger, etc. may be a great fighter. This does not mean they study or care about martial arts.

A great fighter knows that martial arts are with yourself. You learn more from a loss in a fight than a year in a dojo. 3/4 of what I learned about martial arts, I learned fighting with my brothers and kids at school. You learn to react, counter, how to hold, move, strike, fight in confined space. He may not use this in a humble or noble way, same as a martial artist.

A great martial artist may or may not be a great fighter. Infact the vast majority of martial artists are never involved in a physical confrontation where they use their training effectively. Mosty martial artists train on compliant individuals. They are so humble, modest, whatever, that they cannot morally fight.

1 fight = a life experience
Years of dojo training = $$$ and untested skills

When I hear "great fighter" I think of a person that can actually physically fight and does actually fight.
When I hear a "great martial artist" I think of a person that studies martial arts with enthusiasm. They may not actually be a fighter. They should be capable of defending themselves and they should be able to teach what they are learning.

A fighter is someone that chooses to be in a fight, a martial artist is someone that studies the art of war. I do not feel they are the same thing.

A great fighter is simply someone that defeats opponents in physical combat.

A great martial artist is not only capable of defeating opponents in physical combat, but in doing so without any combat as well. A true martial artist understands not only HOW to fight, but WHY he fights. A great martial artist can explain not only the techniques he uses, but his motivations in using them in any given situation. A great martial artist practices spiritual disciplin as well as physical.

That's pretty much it.

I'm a great fighter, but only an ALMOST great martial artist, but then i've only been doing it for 33 years.

A great fighter has mastered the physical side of fighting mostly if he or she is a competitor. but a great Martial Artist has learned both the physical and the spiritual (not to be confused with religion) side of fighting.

a great Martial Artist is capable of defending himself and winning a fight, but it is out of defending himself and not for any reward as often great fighters are known for.

I feel like a great fighter would specialize in using any item or thing that could potentially be made in to a weapon, that kind of spur of the moment flexibility, a great fighter would have to fight to the death and it maybe by luck and talent, he just still happened to be alive. Fighter: weapons, experience, intends to use deadly force, viscous, takes profession as a game, hard to kill.
Martial arts on the other hand seems to be more about style, discipline, and harmony, it employs many defensive techniques and would seem like a mind game to boost confidence, pain tolerance , and peak strength potential. I know u can use weapons but u are required to have mastered the weapon. I say mind game. Martial artist: weapons, experience, able to use deadly force, mentally in harmony, disciplined, takes profession as an art, predominately more physical. Would seem as a way to settle social conflicts.

Although I am neither, I believe the difference is this:

A great fighter is one who attacks

A great martial artist is one who defends

As Bruce Lee said to the instigator on the boat to the island in Enter the Dragon, "I practice the art of not fighting." And then he releases him from the main ship into the dingy boat dragging behind.
