The vet is an idiot.
It will lengthen the dogs life span.
Most unneutered males end up with prostate cancer or at the very least an enlarged prostate.
Females can get pyometra a life threatening uterine infection and most will end up with mamary cancer if not spayed. Each heat they go through increses the cancer risk by alot so spay or neuter your pets sooner rather than later.

On the contrary, spaying and neutering can increase the life expectancy of your dog quite a bit for a bunch of reasons. The following is from this web site: http://www.vospca.org/archive/spayneut.html
Spayed animals no longer feel the need to roam to look for a mate. The result is that they stay home and have less chance of being involved in traumatic accidents such as being hit by a car. They also have a much lower incidence of contracting contagious diseases, and get into fewer fights.
In males, neutering decreases the chances of developing prostatic disease and hernias, and eliminates the chances of developing testicular cancer. It also reduces problems with territorial and sexual aggression, inappropriate urination (spraying) and other undesirable male behaviors.
In Females, spaying decreases the incidence of breast cancer (the rate goes down to almost zero if the spaying is done before the first heat cycle!). It eliminates the chance of developing a serious and potentially fatal infection of the uterus experienced by many mature unspayed animals (pyometra). Spay surgery also eliminates the heat cycle and associated mood swings and undesirable behaviors, messy spotting (in dogs) and the attraction of all available males to your yard.

Maybe it was a miscommunication, but it lengthens it.. pregnancy is draining on the females body and can shorten dog's life span if bred over and over. I wonder if it's true with humans

It actually lengthens their life. If you're not specifically planning to breed them, you should absolutely get them spayed or neutered as soon as your vet recommends.

no i never heard of such thing i think it would it would let the dog live longer. But that is if everyting goes ok in the surgery but you should not worry just keep an eye on your dog and if he acts funny in anyway take him right away to the vet.

No it does not, It simply thought by some, because the quality of life is less enjoyable without the joy of sex. The animals however have no idea of this, therefore does not effect them.

it does NOT shorten the life, it gives life...not neutering, can get prostate type cancers and not spaying uterine type cancers and other illnesses.

I believe it lengthens it, but I'd have to talk to a vet to find out for sure.
