The cat is obviously ill and needs to see a Vet pronto. He could have a bone caught in his throat which has caused a scratch at the back of the throat and the blood will come down the nose and out of the mouth. Hi thee, together with the poor creature, to either a Vet or the PDSA clinic if you can't afford expensive Vet care. Either way, get the cat some medical attention now before he chokes to death.

Notice if the blood is coming from one nostril (note which one) or both nostrils.
If the pet is sneezing, note how often.
Attempt to keep the pet calm. Encourage the pet to lie down and relax.
Place an ice pack (covered by one or more layers of cloth) or compress to the side of the nose.
If the nose is bleeding profusely or the bleeding lasts more than 10 minutes, seek veterinary attention.
What NOT to Do
Do not put anything up the nose. This will likely cause the pet to sneeze. Sneezing will dislodge a clot if one has formed and the bleeding will resume.
A bloody nose in a cat or dog may be associated with foreign bodies (foxtail awns are common), polyps, infections, poisoning, bleeding disorders, or even cancer. It is a sign whose significance should not be underestimated

I would recommend that you tell your mum to take her cat to the vet right away. or maybe to an animal hospital. I have never new a cat could do this. I dont think that bleeding from the nose for a cat is common. Your mum's cat could have a sever cold. I am not sure. Just take him to the vet because this could be serious. And the cat needs to be looked at before something worse happens to him.

To the vet as soon as poss it could be a lot of things some of which are very nasty
it the bleeding is in the nose a cold compress can help slow it but if it is from lower down it won't help

If your cat is sneezing and has blood coming from its nose I would take it to the vet right away. It could be an internal infection. Bleeding from the nose isnt normal for cats nor is sneezing a lot.

I don't like cats but if my dog was bleeding from the nose I wouldn't even waste a second and go to animal emergency. I have never heard of this, how scary for any animal lover.
