The best way and cheapest well sometimes it can be hard to find cheapest. i also own a 68 beetle. pick up a 1915 longblock buy it from someone on thesamba.com thats probably the cheapest place to buy vw stuff from people. turbo is a bad idea because it will cost you alot of money for that. if you get a 1915 cc put dual weber carbs, a really effective electric fuel pump and get s&s exhaust. you should be on your way to being a pretty fast bug. then later down the road when you save money you can upgrade the heads and pistons on the 1915cc. superflow heads are about 850 bucks they are huge!!. and if you can afford it and you dont want to get those heads definetly get it all ported and polished man. oh yeah get elcectronic ignition or for a couple bill distributor-less ignition. have fun man

The cheapest easiest way to make a beetle fast is to put it on a trailer and pull it with any other car ever made.

Buy the VW magazine, they'll tell you just about all you want to know. My husband is the mechanic in the family, we have 6 VW's and still collecting! I would also recomend
the Volkswagon book for stupid people. It's really called that, and you can get it at different auto stores. It helped me, but evidently I didn't read enough of it yet to help "you." Sorry, and good luck. If I knew your e-mail address, I could have my husband tell you directly.

clean the spark plugs. Get an oil change, change the filter and you will notice a marked improvement.

don't forget, any parts for the beetle you can still get online in mexico city. They used to make them there.
