Like others have said, usually kissing the forehead and noticing that it's warm tells me I should take the temperature. I have an ear thermometer which takes the temperature in 3 seconds. This is a quick way to give me an idea of the temp rather than guessing. If it registers a fever I usually take the diaper off and do a rectal temperature, which is the most accurate way, and then I know for sure how sick my baby is. Anyway, an ear thermometer is worth the investment to give you a quick way of checking the temp which isn't real invasive.

all kids are different but , usually these are good guidelines for most kids---- flushing of the face and/or the ears, consistant feeling of warmth (by touch) all over body, not just the head---complaining of being cold or freezing when the temperature is comfortable to everyone else----whenever a child is experiencing a bug, flu, cold, etc. it's a good idea to check their temparature even if they have no symptoms to just to keep up on the condition and any change that may occur during sickness

Usually if my daughter looks flushed or feels warm to the touch I take her temperature. I don't bother otherwise unless she's acting really off, I always take her temperature before I call the pediatrician for advice, just in case they ask.

If your child is lathargic, fussy/crabby for no apparent reason, cheeks flushed or overly pale, skin hot and moist to the touch, child complains of being very cold...these are all signs that you should be taking their temperature.

Lethargy, red rimmed eyes, whining and tearful over seemingly little things... just behavior that seems really out of the norm for your child. If the child seems hotter than normal to the touch, or may be sweating.

YOu should be able to tell just by touching their body. There really isn't any signs. When my daughter has a fever she is usually herself. Just touch the baby and see if he feels warm or hot to you and take his temperature. YOu can also always just take it. It doesn't hurt to be safe.

There are several signs...

If they have rosey cheeks or they look pale... either place your cheek to their forehead or kiss their forehead, if they feel warm check it. If you notice they arn't playing like normal its always a good idea to check their forehead. Or if they appear to be winney or unhappy. Its better to be safe than sorry.

If your child is acting differently than they usually act or sleeping more than usual. Also if they are older, then they complain of pain.

If they are lethargic, flushed or sweaty would be good indicators.
Or just feel them to see if they feel exceptionally warm.
