I sware..I burn it everytime. I can stand there and have hubby tell me what buttons to push on the microwave and I burn it everytime. He does the exact same thing he tells me and it comes out perfect...Am I cursed? Did I upset the corn god in my past life? Does anyone else have this experience.

Yes I always burn it. and you can't stop me either. Because I'm crazy like that. Yesterday I ran around the house with scissors in my hand, oh yeah, you can't stop me. Sunday while washing my hair I decided to 'lather and rinse', but I skipped the 'repeat' part. You think I'm kidding? I'm crazy and don't try and stop me because I'll only do it again. Oooh man...don't even get me started.

If you are standing there and doing what your husband says and still burning it what must be happening is you are not quick enough to hit the buttons he tells you.

The cross-over point between ok popcorn and burned is a matter of only - like - a second or two. If you wait until someone else says "Ok. Push 'stop'" by the time you turn off the microwave its too late.

You have to know - particularly if you have a high-powered oven - the sound of the popping point where you have to stop the oven. That popping sound is when it sounds like the major part of the popping has slowed down but isn't so slowed down it sounds like there's only a few left to pop.

Here's how I'd categorize the sound of the levels of done:

Just starting up (a really brief time)
Full-blown popping (most of the popping time)
Slowing down a little (not all that noticeable)
Slowed down mostly (clearly kernels still popping and you'd worry about wasting popcorn if you shut it off now)
Way slowed down (so there's only a kernal or two here or there)

Stop it at "slowed down mostly" once you have established that the popping as reached this stage. (In other words, notice that it has slowed down mostly, let it go another second or two to get a few more kernals, and then stop it.) You aren't cursed. You are waiting a second or two too long while it is in the "slowed down mostly" phase. If you wait until its "way slowed down" you get burned popcorn.

Resist the tendency to believe there's still more to go when it has gone to "mostly slowed down" for more than a second or two; and certainly don't let it go more than 1 second into "way slowed down". Perfect popcorn is not a complicated art - and yet I have managed to turn it into one, haven't I.....

(I have a higher-powered microwave, and the popcorn that has directions that say "5 minutes" is perfect if I do it onf 4 minutes and 45 seconds.)

We don't know your microwave. We're not there. I assume that your bag says something like 3 1/2 or 4 or 5 minutes. Well, you have to spend 5 minutes of your time being bored silly, babysitting your microwave to see when EXACTLY it starts to stop popping down to ONLY 2-3 pops a second. Then use THAT number to do it from then on.
IF you change brands, you have to base it on your new time (assuming same size).. and watch it again to tweak the timing for the new brand/or size. I after the first watch... I never burned my corn again! Good luck.

Okay, I am going to share this with you, because I hate it when a husband gets the best of you.

Take a microwave safe soup bowl or deep dinner plate and place it upside down in your microwave on the turn table. Place the bag on top of the plate, and continue with the regular procedure.

The air under the plate helps to keep the popcorn from burning. Try this and let me know what you think.

I finally got to the point where I do not always burn it but I still do sometimes. I only put it on for about 2 minutes or less. I get a lot of kernals that don't pop but at least the popcorn that does pop taste better than burn.

Even if you hit the specfially designed button for popcorn you must listen to the pops. When the time hits around 1 min to go you want to count the time in between the pops If it is more than 2-5 seconds just take it out cause any longer will cause scorching.

No, not often anymore, because I know the secret. They say upto 5 mintues, and you burn it,because you always set the microwave for 5 minutes.- But it really takes 2 to 4 minutes. When the popping slows, it's done.

sometimes it happens to everyone. ur best bet is to stand over it and count the seconds between popping. if more than ten seconds go by without a few popping take it out. that should help u not burn it
