it was a mixture of numbness and pain. there were no symptoms though-just a complete sudden failure of the whole right side of the body. but my mom remembers it all and was still able to talk,etc. and she got up only a minute later, but still dizzy.

Sounds like stroke - take her to the hospital immediately!

Because she was able to regain strength in her right side quickly, it was actually probably a TIA which is more temporary than a stroke and doesn't cause permanent damage. Either way, you should get her to a doctor immediately.
