My engagement ring is set with the diamond from my mom's engagement ring. It's usually a piece of jewelry or hankerchief, usually from a close relative.

I had three items for "something old." I wore my grandmother's wedding dress. She died in childbirth when my father was born, so I never knew her, but the dress had been preserved, and it was beautiful. It was over 60 years old when I wore it.

I also wore earrings that had belonged to my mother's grandmother so I had something from both sides of my family. I don't know how old they were, but probably they were from the 19th Century, as my great-grandmother died about 1900.

The third was a handkerchief that belonged to my husband's deceased grandmother - his mother wanted me to carry that, so I did. It was maybe 20 years old.

When my daughter got married, she wore a necklace that my father had given to my mother for their wedding 66 years earlier. My mother had given it to her a year or so before her death.

A handkerchief that my grandfather brought back from Japan after WW II to give to my grandmother, she brought it to me on my wedding day, I was so surprised, I loved it because it was like a piece of both of them since he had carried it all the way back to the US from Japan on a Navy ship at the end of the war and she had taken great care of it for 60 years since then! The best part is that they were still alive and there that day to be with us when we got married, and it was a surprise when she gave it to me so it was so special! Make sure to slow yourself down on that day and enjoy the family you have there with you, you will only have that day once and those people won't always be there in years to come!

I used a hankerchief. My great-grandmother had passed away right before my husband and I had started dating and we were really close so I knew that whatever I used for my something old I wanted it to have belonged to her. So, my granny had an old hankerchief of hers. Older ladies used to have really nice hankerchiefs, it even had a flower on it in my colors. My mother (who made my flowers) pinned it on the back of my flowers, so I carried it with me. I still have it on my flowers! But, you could use an old set of pearls if you had those. Or a bracelet. I hope this helps you out a little bit.

I am going to use the bow that my mom wore in her wedding 40 years ago. I was going to use this beautiful beaded evening bag my grandmother willed to me when she passed but I can't find it and my wedding is a week away. I may have to give up on that one.

When I got married my something old, was also something borrowed. I tied my great grandfathers handkerchief into my bouquet. You are suppose to use something from a marriage you admire. My grandparents were married over 60 years.

My something old was a gold wedding band that had been my great grandmothers and my mom placed it on my ring finger at the beginning of the ceremony just like my grandmother had done to her and her grandmother had done to her and so on....
