That's one way. It may be the only way if the lender is not willing to grant a release of liability to the cosignor.

I guess it would depend on the circumstances. In the case of divorce from or death of the cosigner probably so. More info would have been helpful

No...you could pay cash and there would be no need for a cosigner.
