When choosing a puppy, you have to consider how much time you have to spend with it to train it properly and how active your lifestyle is. Also remember that puppies turn into dogs so make sure the adult will be the right fit for your family. That said, you might want to check the AKC web site or one of the many rescue sites or specific web sites (such as an Akita site) for the breed you are considering. Also the Dog Channel web site might have some useful articles on breeds including mixed breeds. I like Dog Channel because it gives snapshots of the breed, and whether or not the overall breed is good with children and other pets. It also lists breeders for each breed featured. Once you think you've found the breed for you, then check the rescue sites too because you can find some wonderful dogs through there that need a good home.

My advice is not to get a very young puppy unless you are ready to focus on house breaking and spend a lot of time training the puppy in the rules of the house. Adopting a dog from a local shelter who is about 1 year old is good in two ways: 1) Already house broken; 2) Doing a good thing by adopting a dog. Just make sure if you adopt a dog from a shelter that you know a little about it's background.

An ideal dog for homes with children is a Beagle or Beagle mix. They are generally gentle, the older they get, the calmer they get, and they are very loving and have a strong "pack" mentality - their family is their pack. I had a wonderful beagle who was great with my children. She passed away this summer. When my youngest child is old enough to walk, we'll start looking at local shelters and rescues for another beagle.

The answer to this depends on the age of the kids, where you live and how much time you have to devote to a dog. You should research the breed you choose before bringing it home. Depending on your situation all breeds have good and bad points. Personally I think Golden Retrievers are one of the best dogs to have with kids. They are usually very loving and patient. You have to find a very reputable breeder though because they tend to have some major medical issues due to uninformed over breeding.

Well, i am gonna give you an answer, but i doubt if you'll believe me, are you ready? Rottweiler. I know, I know, they have gained a bad reputation over the years, but believe it or not rotts were originally bred to be family pets. If you go and find someone that is breeding rott pups for family use and not fighting, and you can do a little research on that puppy, that would really be the best breed for you. Now i know that you're probably not going to take my advise, but i gave it anyway. Hope i could be of some assistance to you.

When my son was a toddler I had a lab/chow mix , and a Siberian Husky and both was very very great with my son even when he was toddling around and learning about pets. If they got tired of him they would just walk away.

I have a border collie right now and she is just so great with my son. She dont even act like a 6 month old puppy .she is the most laid back dog I have ever had !! she is more content just to lay right beside you and be petted while my husbands puppy is a hellion on wheels lol.

Labs are great dog to my mom has one that grew up with my son also they are kid friendly.

To be honest though I dont get into the purebreeds though. I think they have to many medical issues with them because most of them are interbreed to much with mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and so forth. Every purebreed my mom has had nothing but major medical expenses. the muts are just great dogs and that is all I have had and they have been the best dogs around and not to many if any medical issues from them

I agree with the first answer on here. I would go with either a golden retreiver because they are very loving and really good with kids, also a cocker spaniels are great too. And both dogs are very beautiful dogs. Or a Laborador Retriever would be a nice family dog.

I have had several breeds and the Labrador Retriever has impressed me the most. They are very versatile, loving affectionate and tolerate kids to no end. There is nothing you can not train them and there is so much you can do with them. They do not have an aggressive or tempermental bone in their body.

I belive any kind of dog can be good for a family as long as its raised around kids. my sister-n-law has a pit bull pup. that as gentle as can be with my 1yr old nephew. just don't get a cat b/c i've been told they will lay on top of a baby when there sleeping and suffercate them. My personal sugesstion would be a cockapoo(male) they loveing, cute, sweet, and they are as hyper as you.(if ur running their running, if ur sitting on the couch then their sitting on the couch)

you won't get a better more loving dog than with a mutt. good old fashioned hound mix or shepherd mix...best most loyal dogs ever without all those inbred tendencies that come with akc dogs. no need to check lineage or worry about back yard breeders here, just nature taking it's course. any dog brought up with love and discipline is a good dog for kids
