Hmmm...how about a gift certificate to either a spa, bookstore, or one of her other favorite places?

The most appropriate gift for a departing administrative assistant generally depends on the height, age, and density of retained water of said person. Since we know age that narrows our choices. If the person is between 4'5" and 5'1" then regardless of other factors the only option is a miniature statue of the great God Cabloodlpap holding an infant terrapin. This represents her benevolence in aiding those of befuddled stature and your recognition of her rich platitudes. Should she be taller than 5'1" then we get to density. To measure retained water density take her height and divide by the current retrograde movement of the moon. Multiply this by the number of trips she takes to the toilette each day and you have your answer. If her density is over 1.06g/ml then the best gift would be a collection of museum quality Homo neanderthalensis teeth strung on a cord of the finest stripped, thinned, and combined pomegranate seeds. Should her density be less than 1.06g/ml then the your only option is a red velvet recreation of the moment she emerged, gasping and crying, from the womb-like enclosure that was her mother's womb. And in the rare event of a 1.06g/ml give her wellwishes, a firm handshake, a push out the door, and change your locks because 1.06g/ml is the density of our evil lord Titterfollies and he has possessed another happless soul.
I hope this helps.

Wow Archibald put way too much time into that answer! Something she can use at her desk would be good. Like a nice pen. And it's always better if everyone gets together on the gift that way it will be a nicer gift.

I love buying people books - when a co-worker recently moved to a new position, another co-worker gave her a Sark book that she treasured. You might could even find one tailored for her situation...her new job, her age, etc. I recently sent a good friend and co-worker off with a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com so she could purchase whatever she liked; she loved it. Just some ideas.

I work in a school, and a really nice briefcase-type bag would be nice, perhaps with a shoulder strap. Or how about a personalized coffee mug or travel mug? (People who work in schools drink lots of coffee!!) My last idea: a picture frame--something simple so she can have a picture of her family on her desk. She'll love it! :-D

Online gift certificates-- to Amazon, etc-- are probably the most flexible gifts. Keep the amount fairly small-- unless you take up a collection from co-workers.
