Yes the US military has killed thousands of terrorists/insurgents in Iraq but they've indirectly killed thousands (collateral damage) as well. Beside the major Al Qaeda leaders in Iraq, we have no idea how many terrorists our troops have killded so how do we know if we're winning or losing?

It's tough to know when our goals are fuzzy and ever changing. I heard we went there to spread freedom and democracy. It doesn't seem to be spreading very well. I heard "As they stand up we will stand down." When they stand up they tend to form death squads. I heard this is part of the war on terror. If killing a terrorist inspires others to become terrorists we're in for a war with no foreseeable end.

You can't win. American is trying to fight a concept. The more terrorist and innocents they kill, the more people they will radicalize. The USA will not be able to stop the spread of violence, especially if it continues to challenge other Muslim nations. You know you've lost when the troops pull out and a civil war starts.

The war on terrorism is the defining challenge of American generation, just as the struggle against communism and fascism were challenges of the generations before. As with those earlier struggles, the United States is fully committed to meeting this challenge. They will do everything to win it.
