how many calories hes suppose to have in one day to lose weight? thank you!

I disagree with a lot of the other answers. Cutting back to 1000 - 1200 calories a day is disastrous, especially for someone his size. He will feel like he is starving and his body will respond to starvation mode -- it will hoarde calories and make it even harder to lose weight. In addition, because he'll feel like he's starving, he's being set up for failure...he'll end up binging at the end of the day because he's so hungry.

So first, instead of thinking how many calories he needs to eat in a day, he should think of the reverse: to take off one pound per week, he'll need to reduce calories by 500 per day. (One pound of body fat equals about 3,500 calories.) So if he just cuts out 250 calories by eating a little less and also burns 250 calories per day via exercise, he's on his way to losing a pound a week. Eat a little less, exercise a little more and he'll lose a little more.

But when you go too extreme, your body rebels and makes it even harder.

To calculate daily caloric needs, there are plenty of calculators online. Here's one:

The answer depends on a lot of things, really. All we can give you is a rule of thumb. A big part of it is how much he plans to weigh ultimately. Lean body mass needs calories, but fat does not! If he's not especially muscular or big-boned, then about 1000 to 1200 calories should probably be fine. More if he exercises, but definitely no less than that (we don't want his body to think it's starving).

It bears mentioning that this is not ONLY an appropriate amount of calories for losing weight - this is how much he should eat on a daily basis for the rest of his life. If you think of diet as life change and not something you're just doing to lose weight, you'll probably end up with something healthier, more preferable, and something that will keep the weight from coming back, too!

According to the body mass index chart, his ideal weight is about 150 pounds. Again, that can vary depending on his body type, but it gives you an idea of the goal you're shooting for!

Any where between 1000 and 1500 calories is probably good. Whats more important is what he is eating. Avoid unneccesary fats, especially saturated fats. Before he eats something, he needs to look at the nutritional label and decide if its a good deal or not. Dont eat the McMuffin in the morning because it will give you all the fat you can have in a day and you'll most likely get hungrey later. Look into vegan food. BOCABURGERS are pretty good and have no fat. Morningstar farms makes a bunch of excellent vegan foods. The BBQ RIBLETTE rocks! the chicken patty is absolutely indistinguishable from a real chicken patty.
Stop drinking soda and beer. Totally useless calories.
And drink more water, LOTS of water. It makes you feel full, and is calorie, fat, and cholesterol free.

I am 6'2" and 255. I had a heart attack on June first of '06 and had to loose weight fast. The vegan thing and quiting pepsi and beer allowed me to loose 33 pounds in under 4 months.

It all depends on how many calories he needs to consume to maintain that weight. For example if he needs 3000 to maintain this. try reducing that to 2500. All depending on if he is exercising or not! And eating a sensible diet. For more info, contact myself!
