I know there is the vet, frontline, sergents and hartz and lord knows what else, but the prices are crazy. What did they do in the old days, there use to be some blue stinky stuff you pour in bath water and dip the dog in it.I rub garlic oil on my dog but it ran me off besides the fleas.I only let him out to use the potty. HELP!!!

If you make their food, put bone meal and a lot of garlic in when cooking or less amounts of raw if you don't. Then you can gradually increase. it will take about a month for this to start working.

You can rub garlic oil and a citric acid (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit) into their coats initially. The stronger the acid (lemon) the faster the cure, but your dog may not be able to handle it.

YOu give your dog all the bathes you want but fleas are fleas they are going to get them no matter what you do them unless you do put frontline on them. Sergents and Hartz is a complete joke and a waste of money. I do use Sergents shampoo for fleas right before I put frontline on my pets

Just because you let him only outside to potty the fleas will jump on him because he is warm blooded and will keep the fleas warm.

If you are truly wanting to get the fleas off sorry frontline is the only way to go . If you dont want to use that and just give them baths all the time then you are dealign with a allergic reaction to the dog, and tapeworms

Additonal Information

You are probably going to hear alot of home remedies. If they really worked do you think Frontline would still be in business ? And also do you really want to try all these remedies that might hurt your dog or tear up his insides so you dont have spend 40 or some bucks on stuff that last 3 months . You get three months supply for 40 bucks it breaks down to 13.33 cents a month for three months is that really to much to spend on yoru pet and know for a fact that it works and your dogs will be flea free and tapeworm free ?

honestly, those things just don't work very well -- that's why stuff like frontline was needed.

i have cats. two of them. and this summer we had ourselves a little flea invasion. we tried baths, dips, drops, collars and total home fogging...and NONE OF IT WORKED. by the time i put in all the time and money into these efforts, i might as well have just taken the critters to the vet and gotten the frontline in the first place, because now i've spent twice as much.

the frontline is the only thing that actually worked because it ends the life cycle of the fleas. the eggs stop hatching.

anyway, that's my random (but honest) product endorsement for the day.

I know its really expensive to buy frontline and advantage, and some people can not afford those things. I bathe my dog in flea shampoo 2-3 times a month and it kept the fleas off this year. We live in a colder environment tho so this might be why.

You answered your own question, have him professionally dipped at a groomers and get frontline. I guarantee if the fleas were on you, you would spare no expense to get rid of them. As far as th old days, the stuff back then did not work that's why the likes of frontline was invented.!

I found this answer from someone who answered a Yahoo question.....wash you pet with Ivory body wash or ivory dish soap, and spray your pets with Avon skin so soft... no chemicals and fleas hate the smell.... have to keep up with the spraying every two weeks. good luck i had the same problem.... nasty little critters...

a couple of lavender oil drops on the back of the neck

or citrus drops on the back of the neck.

I only use these methods because the vet medications make my cat sick.
