My son is 6, and we are in our first year of homeschooling... in a new city (Las Vegas, NV). I was going to sign him up for public school... but due to the nature of the schools here, we have decided to home school.

The complex we are in seems to not have many kids around for him to play with, and the few kids that are here don't ever seem to be outside.

What are some ideas where I can get him involved with other kids? Right now we have him in Spiral Scouts, and are looking into sports... but we would like to have regular meetings with other families... Any ideas?

I would appreciate answers for not knocking our choice to homeschool. We are looking for groups, not your personal take on why or why not I am not having my son in homeschooling.

If you would like to debate the choice to homeschool, fine, e-mail me instead directly. Thank you.

Part of the reason I don't have him in the school, is because the crime at the school and another reason is they really have no PTA. The schools out here are horrible. There are other alternatives than turning my kid into a hoodlum.

i'm not sure where to find the groups, but wanted to praise you for caring enough about your son to homeschool him. public schools these days (anywhere) prove to be failing in every aspect. i strongly believe it is our job as parents to teach our children. at least we know where they are and what they are learning.

I would recommend enrolling him in your local public school and then get involved with the PTA so you can get a better understanding of the school. That way, you can make it better, both for your child and for future students. I think you are doing a disservice to your child by homeschooling him when you live in such a large metropolitan area. It's one thing if you are out in the boonie's but you're in Las Vegas! How is he ever going to learn to function around all types of people if you don't get him out in the world? However, if the schools are that bad (I'm curious about what you think makes it unsatisfactory), why don't you look into private school?

Hey, well I think you should get involved in "P.T.A." meetings at your local public school; its there that you can meet other families that have children around you son's age.

Its not that good to have your son home schooled, because at his age he needs to interact with his peers. So maybe you could try to enroll him as a late admission in the school.

Good Luck :-)
