If at least the female is spayed, then the male won't be as distracted and restless, always waiting for her to come in 'heat'..It will also protect her from breast cancer, which is epidemic in unspayed females,,,You will also avoid all the stresses of her 'heat' season..staining everywhere she sites, male dogs hanging around, her stress and confusion, disobedience, trying to run away, etc..
Great Danes have such a short life expectancy, that it would certainly help if the possibilities of pyometra and breast or uterine cancers were eliminated by spaying.

You will be happier with them both, as pets, guardians, companions, if you can get both of them fixed..but, if only one, the female is the priority..

Note: To all the 'smarties' that challenged your choice of terms..According to the dictionary, NUETER does mean to castrate OR spay...http://www.thefreedictionary.com/neuter

BOTH !

Unless Breeding or Showing you should certainly get the female spayed!
. Even with a spayed female your Shepherd will probably become possessive and will guard her from other males.
Full Male Shepherds need firm handling as does any of the 'Bred to Guard breeds' they will certainly challenge you or whoever they see as 'Alpha Male' at some point and a female adds to the problem there!
A Neutred male is easier to control and wont try and get out to find someone elses female either.
For both there are lots of health benifits anyway so in the long view could also save you money (more than the bills for the operations).

Great Danes have large litters, cross-bred pups are harder to place and with GSD in the mix often harder than most!
You have time to Think carefully about it, decide if you can even cope with puppies
(the cost alone stops me) They wont operate on her till about six months anyway.
It would be better to decide about the dog first.

Whatever you decide Good Luck with them both.

Firstly, well done for thinking about this before it's too late!

Your vet is probably the best person to consult regarding this. However, it would probably be best to get the male done now, and wait until the Great Dane puppy is a little older. Some people advise that a b.itch should be allowed its first season (NOT 1st LITTER!!) before spaying. There are pros and cons to the best times to spay/neuter, which your vet will be better able to explain than I could.

It will eventually be worth neutering both.

Hope all goes well.

You can't get a female neutered. You can have the female spayed or have the male neutered. The cheapest and least dangerous is having the male neutered. That will not keep your female safe from wandering neighborhood males when she is in heat. The wisest thing to do is have them both done. That way you don't have to worry about either having pups or your male dog causing someone else's dog to have pups. You'll also be protecting your female from some kinds of hormone-driven cancers.

What you need to take into consideration is that Females will go into heat. If she is and outside dog than that may not be an issue with the mess that comes along with it. But now your going to have all of the dogs around making their visits to your house. The other thing that is common in female is infection which can be very pricey. And last but not least is raising a litter is hard work and very messy it can pay of or you may think that it wasn't worth the work.
Now the male you stud him and you agree to some type of stud fee whether it is a puppy or cash. The draw back is that he will be more obedient if he is fixed. But the most important thing is that when you get them fixed they live longer. Since I have done it I would have to say fix the female it is easier.

If you're going to neuter, choose the male German Sheppard, if you're going to do similar treatment for a female, get them Spayed, in other words, this takes out the ovaries and the uterus. Although expensive, it certainly is worth it we have two Jack Russel Terriers, from the same litter, and both were payed within a few months.

Hope this helps.

Alternatively, you can castrate the male, its much better than neutering, as neuterisation only lasts a few months and is done with tablets, rathe than one whole operation.

Male Dogs
1. Will run off looking for a female especially if he can smell a female in heat.
2. Will mark their territory in your house especially when there is another dog in the house and you will have messes to clean up even if they are house broke
3. Males its a easier surgery on them then the female

Females
1. Male dogs will hang around your house when she is in heat
2. You will have to put sanitary pads or diapers on her when she in heat due to the blood she will discharge
3. If she gets loose and mates you will have puppies and then they are taken to the pound and most likely be layed down because of over population now in humane societys
4. Females are very annoying when they are in heat, they whine, cry and no sleep at nights

If it was me I would get both of them fixed. You are not going to be breeding the two together so why take the chances then.

It would be better to get the male neutered because females get spade. Anyway, I know what you mean. There a few things to think about. Males have a longer life expectancy if they are neutered. The risk of them getting cancer greatly diminishes. You also want to think about the female because she will be getting her period when she is in heat. Is that something you want to deal with? My answer would be get them both fixed.

As a female cannot be neutered, only spayed, you should probably not get her neutered. You should probably get her spayed though, because no matter how much the male runs around you will never get stuck with his puppies, but if someone else's male comes he can impregnate your female.

All your animals should be fixed. i have a dog and a cat and all are fixed... but to neuter an animal it must be male only. males are neutered, not females.

Help stop the over population of unwanted animals spay / neuter your cat's an dog's..... that quote is from BOB Barker, from the Price is Right.......
