You need to count the higher number, the total calories. The fat calories number is telling you how many of those calories are from the fat in the food. You want to shoot for no more than 30% of your calories from fat in your overall diet, so a good way to achieve this is to limit your intake of foods with more than 30% of calories from fat.

This change in labeling was made basically so people don't have to do the math themselves: 1 g of fat = 9 calories, so something with 2.2 g of fat would contribute 20 fat calories.

Caloric needs per person vary greatly depending on age, height, weight, gender, and level of activity. You can find calorie calculators online...here's one so you can figure out how many calories you need in a day:

Also, remember that to lose one pound of fat you need to burn 3500 calories. That means if you want to lose 1 lb per week, you need to take in 500 less calories per day, either by cutting back on food, exercising, or both.

You count the kCal, the fat kCal is what you need to worry about, if you have 70 calories and 20 fat calories, you have to look at the % of the ratio. That is almost half fat in your calories, that must be potato chips! You want something more like 120 calories with only 20 fat calories. That is a 5:1. Much better than the example. You need to eat about 2500 calories a day, and out of that you only need about 500 of those to be fat. Your body needs some fat for your body, but to much will make your obese.

you count the TOTAL calories, so in your example, 70. It means out of the 70 calories, 20 of them came from the fat.

You just use calories if you are going on a low calorie diet,and fat calories if you are going on a low fat diet.They are two different diets.Does this help you any?
