New York state used to be the dominant apple-produced in North America (Washington state is now; NY is second-highest); and these apples were shipped around the world from NYC.

maybe there was a big apple tree there or planted to signify new york being formed, that's my theory.

I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THE BIG JAZZ BANDS OF THE LATE THIRTIES AND THE DANCE CALLED THE BIG APPLE GAVE PROMINENCE TO THE NAME FOR NYC I BELIEVE THAT WAS SATCHMO'S VERSION
