I use my real pic because its me , its who i am, i just cant find the likeness in a cartoon.
Addenum...my real pic has drawn no attention good or bad, thats not why its there, cant bring mysef to be represented with a doe eyed barbie doll,

Most (but not all) of the real pictures I've seen for avatars are people who are trying to show off their bodies. Sad that they don't have anything else to be proud of. If you notice, the people with avatars of their legs or breasts or some other body part (other than their face) are usually the ones who give either short, uninformed, or mean answers.

I dont think all that many people put their real pictures on the avatars- i think the pics represent who they want to be. i have seen some nice ones, but not the majority. I find no purpose in putting your real pic online for the whole world of strangers to see. I would think it would draw unnecessary attention. But if that person didnt mind, then i guess they would be ok for them.
I personally wouldnt.
