I just got a kitten and I want to make sure that he gets the best nutrition. However, we both share a loathing for wet(canned) cat food... I the smell, he the taste apparently. What sort of things and how often can I feed him so he gets all the nutrients he should be getting at his age?
Thanks

A male cat should have 50% of his diet in wet food and the rest can be dry. The important issue is the quality of the meat that goes into the cat food.

All grocery store brands, Iams, Purina, Science Diet are very poor food made with by-product meat not considered fit for human consumption. That meat includes heads, feet, entrails, feathers from chickens, the most common protein source in pet food.

Try brands like Eagle Pack, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Felidae, etc. You may pay 50 cents to a $l.00 more a bag for dry and it will pay off in better long-term health for the kitten. Their canned foods are the same high-quality.

If you want the utmost in feline nutrition you will do your own raw meat diet. For information on that go to: www.catinfo.org or www.ThePetCenter.com.

Good question, and one that shows you to be a responsible cat guardian with kitty's best interest at heart.

Read this and you'll know more about feline nutrition than most vets!

You'll see that most of what you'll hear about feeding your cat is dead wrong (and how much of it can, in the long run, lead to a prematurely dead cat!) That includes what you may hear from many vets. (They can be excused, since medical schools don't teach much about nutrition in general and almost nothing about the unique, specialized nutritional needs of cats.)

Short version: No dry food, it can lead to several long term health issues, all of them serious.

Actually, if you follow that one simple rule, no dry food, your kitty will be much better off than many cats. But there's so much more to it than that!

I can see that you're interested in kitty, so I'm sure you'll enjoy Dr. Lisa's site.

I fed mine Purina Kitten Chow with a mixture of wet food. She is totally healthy and happy ! Leave dry food out only so they can nibble at it when they want. Cats don't eat a whole lot (like dogs) at one time.
