I heard it on tv. what race is it insulting?

it's an anti-Italian slur.

"wop" allegedly refers to Italians arriving without paperwork at Ellis Island; "WithOut Papers" was allegedly abbreviated and stamped on their forms.

"Dego" or "Dago" is presumably a shortened version of Itralian names like "D'Agostino."

It is a derogatory remark aimed at Italians. It is a shame, too, because I have a lot of "Spaghetti Bender" friends that are neither stupid, wops nor degos. ; - )

Wop and dego (also spelled dago) both are slurs referring to someone of Italian ethnicity.

My part-Italian uncle once told me a joke that was popular among he and his friends: Ever hear of an Italian who had a flat tire? When his tires pop, DAGO WOP wop wop...

SIlly!

Dago: (U.S.) someone of Italian descent (originally derived from the Spanish name Diego, it was applied to Spanish, Portuguese or Italian sailors) (UK) a Italian or Spanish person, often greasy dago; any person from a Spanish-speaking country Somebody from Argentina (increasingly common since Argentine economic crisis of 2001)

Wop Italians High class Italian. Stands for "With Out Papers." Started when there was a big Italian emigration to the U.S., and many were coming in illegally (with out papers).

actually, I think it's "stupid whop dago", but it's a racial slur against an Italian person. There seems to have been a lot of anti-Italian sentiment in the first half of the century, but I'm not sure exactly why.

It's an slur used by ignorant people and along with some other phrases should be dropped from usage. It is insulting to Italians and has no other meaning except to insult.
