area? I ask because most questions are answered by people who are simply repeating by rote what they have been taught by parents and churches. Most questions don't even get answered. Instead they are platforms for people to preach, without really answering anything. How hard is it to come up with your own answer, in your own words? I would imagine that it isn;t that hard, but then again, I am an atheist who hasn't been taught that my ideas and observations are an insult to god.
By no means am I implying that everyone here does this, occasionally I get a very well thought out and presented answer, but it seems that the majority of answers I recieve are the your going to hell, and here read this impossibly long scripture I found. If you want to give me scripture, why don;t you tell me where to find it, and then summarize it in your OWN words?

"Benchmarks and signposts." They enable us to quickly summarize a particular question into our specific beliefs. The same thing applies to "homilies" whether they are the thing of old wives tales or the quotation of scripture.
It is very difficult for the average human to come up with something unique and creative when faced with something that they think they have the answer for. If it were in fact an easy thing to do, all of us would be getting our doctorates from a top ivy league university. Bottom line?
I believe the most difficult thing for a person to say is, "I don't know."

I answered a similar question elsewhere.
Why did your high school English or History professor ask you for references in your term paper? So that you can show that you know what your talking about - because you did some research before you just pulled an answer off the top of your head.
Jut giving a bare opinion or conclusion without stating the basis for that opinion sounds unprofessional and ignorant.
It is also true that sometimes I simply cut & paste from wikkipedia just to show the asker how lazy she is for not doing her own homework before asking an easily answered question.
Why do you assume that a person who is giving you a quote hasn't trought about it? Maybe he simply agrees with the author.
People usually give a quote because: (i) too lazy to re-invent the wheel (another author has said it better); (ii) he is trying to follow Jesus or Bubbha or Muhmannd or whoever, not start their own religion; (iii) most people ask silly questions that can be easily answered in a few minutes with Goggle anyway (why waste too much time on the answer if the asker didn't spend the time researching); and, (iv) he wants to show that he knows what he's talking about because he did some research.

I can't speak for everyone and I don't think I fall into the catigory you are talking of though I do on ocasion use scripture in my answers I try to do so only when involving specific christain subjects. I use scriptures that I have read for myself. I have studied them and found them to be true. I am not overly interseted in what churches or my parents have taught only what I have learned through study and prayer. I try to use scriptures to emphasie those things. I guess I will have to be carefull from now on to make sure that I express how I feel in a way that it is aparrent it is from me. THank you for making me thingk about this.

The problem with putting it in my own words, is that if I understand it a certain way, my words causes others to argue and say that is not their idea of the interpretation.
What I find most fulfilling is knowing that the interpretation I gain, works for me, and does not mean I have the right to say this interpretation is the one you need to follow.
I agree that many feel this is a platform for preaching.
I thought this was a platform for questions and answers.
Maybe I do not understand the interpretation of these.

If you have a question concerning the basics of The True Christian Faith you may email me.
when I find an honest question here I do my best to answer from my understanding of the subject. If it concers The Bible or a subject from the Bible then it requires some reference to The Bible... I do not have the Bible memorized... But I know The Truth it contains. That is what I will use to answer any question concerning The basics of my Faith... if you are going to put limitations on answers then you need to be in the political sections...that it a political ploy to try to dominate and deceive.

No. That's the reasons i don't bother much. I never did get a proper answer about baptism. All i got was told I'm going to hell because I'm not married to my girlfriend and playing poker,oh and loads of scripture of course lol. Waste of time. Sometimes fun to answer other peoples questions though,or aggravating if they are preaching.

heres a tip, if you want an honest answer on religion ask an atheist.
seriously.
i know thats an oddchoice of people to answer a religious question but theyll give you the most straitforward and honest answer/ why? because were not int hr middle of the religion, we can look at things from outside the box. we also do something that the christians dont do. think logically and rationally.
so ask your neighborhood atheist.

Most people do not ask serious questions.
I have spent hours helping people that have serious questions. Most people are here to bash though.
The nut job above me asked a serious question http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmTz5gzCql1F._eFdZEZfKnzy6IX?qid=20061006101655AAsmcDN and no one bashed and we all got along.
LOL she deleted her answer here. I swear she had an answer a minute ago.
