If you're talking about a federal prison, it's www.bop.gov (which stands for Bureau of Prisons. I use it everyday at my job (Probation/Parole Officer). If you're looking for someone doing state time, you have to go to that particular state's website and then link to their Department of Corrections.
As to the person who asked why you would want to, a lot of victims like to reassure themselves that a prisoner is still locked up, especially if they're a victim of a violent crime. I don't know why this person is asking, but a lot of victims like to know. No need to be a smart-a$$ about it. For the ones who said they have no reason to know, good for you. Maybe you will never have to be traumatized by the acts of a criminal, but your self-righteous attitude had nothing to do with answering this question. The person asked for a website. All you did was celebrate the fact that you don't need to know it. That's worthless in regards to the question.

Click on that link and it will take you to a page that lists all of the states. Sometimes they do not publish the information online and you have to send an email requesting the information. You will need to know the birthdate or the SID or TDC number.
