Yup, they are Christians. They believe in God and the Bible. They shun modern technology and the media, which sometimes seems like a very good idea. They make beautiful quilts.

I've been to Amish country before. It is hard to explain, because I am not sure myself.
They seem to shun modern technology because they are not supposed to be dependent on the outside world, which they see as evil. For example, they cannot have electricity simply because it means that they would have to be tied into an outside grid. Some of them do have gas powered machines (like washing machines), but they are not allowed to get gas through a pipeline (outside ties), and they cannot be so dependent on propane powered stuff that they come to rely on people who are outside of the Amish community.
They cannot have telephones in the house, because that would disrupt family life. They can have a telephone in an outhouse or barn for emergency purposes.
The Amish have some type of a board of elders who decides these things.
Normally, their education does not go beyond the eight grade, because that is all that you need to run your own farm, and they tend to avoid subjects like advanced mathematics or science because it might hurt their faith.
They usually do not vote, because that involves participating in the outside world. They are pacifists, so they do not serve in the military (that would also seem to entail interfering with the world).
Pennsylvania has a video explaining the Amish to tourists: "Wilkum: A Video Guide to Lancaster County". You can find it on the web.

They live in a homogeneous community and are characterized by strong religious tradition. There communities are highly integrated because of their social institutions, family, school, church, economic endeavors are complementary and consistent in values and expectations. Pride is a major sin, so is wearing jewelry, not even a wedding band. Efforts of promoting physical attraction are forbidden; boasting is rare and seeking a leadership role is frowned upon. Many do not register to vote. Clothing is an important symbol of group identity, and is unchanged 270-year tradition. Men wear low crown, wide brim hats; coats without collars, gloves are not permitted even in cold weather. slacks with suspenders (belts are not permitted) but without cuffs or creases or pockets. beards but not mustaches for all married men and a special braided hairstyle for females. They even speak a different language (serves as another symbolic attribute) Pennsylvania Dutch is a German dialect resembling Palatine German folk speech is common to all Amish, regardless of where they live. English is the groups second language and taught in school. Children are educated to the 8th grade where the boys then work on the farm and the girls work in the home. The Amish oppose social security and all forms of insurance their belief is that Christian brotherhood is responsible for its own people , social class has no meaning within their community, they share a very strong sense of obligation to eachother. they do not pratice birth control and tend to have large families. They provide home care rather than institutionalized care for their elderly of their community. They are exempt from paying taxes however, they cannot reap any of the benefits, which works for them. Hope this is helpful to you. Some Amishc congregatins have accepted some elements of modern life. The Beachy Amish (founded in 1927) permit ownership of automobiles, and certain othe modern conveniences and the New Amish allow telephones, electricity and tractors. Good luck hope this is helpful to you, I learned this from a colleg course on diversity in America. I find them to be very intresting people.

They are very decent caring people similar to most Baptists in belief but with a few quirky ideas. I don't mean that in a negative sense, just ideas that might be a bit foreign to mainstream American thought. Below is a good web site that talks about their community and their beliefs.

They are extraordinary people. They are true Christians. They are a branch of the Anabaptists. Mennonites and Brethren come from this main belief too. I was a member of the Brethren church for a few years. Wonderful spirit filled people. Read their website below----

The Amish are Christians...as they are of German descent, it would be logical to conclude that their beliefs closely follow the teachings of Martin Luther. Some of their practices, however, resemble the Quakers as well.

They are Christian, but there are many different sects. When one decides he wants to get an education - he starts a sect that believes in traditional American universities & education. I don't mean to disrespect all of them or stereotype, but they seem to believe things on a whim. They wear their "traditional" clothing into modern grocery outlets and wal-marts to shop (??). They don't believe in cars, but they'll ride in them and hire people to drive them (??). Seems to me not so different than not believing in burning buildings, but hiring someone to do it for you? Maybe I have it all wrong... God bless you. ~Nise~

"They seem to be extraordinary people"?
They are.
I don't agree with their ways, but I respect them for it.
Their saving money by not using expensive farm machinery has made them a very rich group.
BRB with more.
