I use a lunch box and Tupperware products for environmental and financial reasons.
My daughter uses a Spongebob Tupperware Sandwich Keeper so her sandwich doesn't get smashed. They collect all of their lunch boxes into one big box that's brought down to the cafeteria. She likes Pringles word chips and they don't get broken when they are packed in a Tupperware snack cup. They also have products that stayed sealed for soup and it'll stay warm. Your child must be mature enough to put all the containers back into their lunch box and bring it home though or you won't be saving any money. Gladware just isn't strong enough to prevent the smashing, it really has to be Tupperware. There is a sale for sandwich keepers with a sports bottle until Oct 13th. You'll get it in a couple of days.
I'm not selling...I truly believe this works the best.

You mean LUNCHABLES brand packaged lunches.??? I think that once in a blue moon you can give these as a meal but making your own lunches from home create less litter. Buy Re-usable drink boxes like the Rubbermaid Sippin' Savers. Make sandwiches and keep them in re-useable Tupperware. If you are worried about the environment, making your own kids' lunches allows you to control what your kids are eating and wasting litter-wise. I recommend having more than one set of lunch Tupperware for each person who takes a lunch. This allows for making meals ahead and equals the convenience of packaged lunches from the store! When I pack my daughters lunch I use reusable containers. Wounder bread has a container that is for sandwiches only. It keeps them fresh and from being smashed. I make her fresh fruit salad and pack it in a small reusable container. If your giving them cookies... wrap them in paper towel... they have their snack and then paper towel to wipe their mouth. Rubber maid has a container just for salads. There is a compartment in the lid for the dressing, bowl for the salad... when they are ready to eat it just push on the lid and it expressed the dressing onto the salad. All they have to do then is open the lid and enjoy. Use lunch boxes (thermal type) instead of bags. The only trash you will have is the paper towel that they wiped their mouths with. Oh Ya, at health food strores they sell biodegradable paper towel.

The only enviromental issues I can think of right now is if the kids left their wrappers and baggies on the ground.
Some good healthy ideas for kids lunches are; whole wheat bread sandwiches, carrot sticks, celery sticks, cheese chunks, apples, bananas, grapes, bottled water, or fruit juices, granola snacks.

I'm not too sure what you mean about environmental issues but....
Some suggestions for packed lunches:
1. Cooked chicken, grilled peppers and sour cream in a wrap or a pitta bread.
2. Pizza sauce and mozzerella melted in the mic in a pitta bread or on french stick
3. Chicken goujons with salsa/sour cream/bbq sauce.
4. Cold pasta mixed with chopped peppers, chopped ham/sausage/salami/cheese/sweetcorn/tuna
5. Rice with the same

You can use lunch boxes with a thermos for the drinks and use Tupperware containers for the other things. Then there should not be any trash.

If you're concerned about environmental issues then I suppose you ought to use organic produce and packaging that is either recycable or resuable
