I am in Modesto and we have vets the treat birds but they are no certified which i feel is important, i would not take my horse to a dog vet just because he was willing to see it...
I am sorry but I am looking for anyone who can help me. I got a 6 month old Budgie 3 weeks ago. He is hand reared and VERY sweet. We bought him from an exotic pet store. He was the only male in a flight cage of around 20 other females and seemed quite playful. We brought him home and was told to leave him alone for two weeks. After two days i noticed that he was super quite and just sat on the bottom of his cage. I went back to the store we got him from and they said just wait a couple days and give him a toy, so I did, but the next day he stated wanting to close his right eye. So I went back to the pet store and they sent me home with Ornacyn Plus (antibiotic) and Millet. He was on the med for 5 days. His eye got really swollen and would not open at all for a while and got bad diarrhea, but

Ornacyn is water soluble and sometimes even when measured properly it's just too broad and too dilute to help serious conditions. We'll have to move fast for treatment because you won't have long.

Birds are very prone to chlamydial infections, and chlamydia does infect eyes, so it's important that if you have a vet, even if they don't normally treat birds, they perform a smear of the discharge from the eye and tell you what it's infected with: they have the right antibiotics for it somewhere. Ask that they give you a "suspension" of what ever prescription it is: that means that the antibiotic will come in the form of a liquid in a pipette. Also ask for acidopholus treatment for the yeast that grows in a bird during antibiotic therapy or else it may be overlooked, since you have been giving antibiotics yourself, and they kill all of the bacteria in the bird: even the good kind.

Wipe down the cage with a clean rag and a little rubbing alcohol and change the paper out every day, to make the environment sterile. If your keet isn't on pellets, also ask the vet for vitamins. They'll help your keet gain the strength he needs to go on. Good luck honey. You must really care to have noticed this so early.

Try looking around other big cities for a bird specialist. Do an online search. I understand not wanting to take it to a non certified vet, but you really need to do something. They go bad real quick, usuallly by the time symptoms show, it's bad.

we have a major problem trying to find a vet who specialisies in birds.i would never dose a bird with antibiotics .when a bird is ill it must have warmth and quite and must be encouraged to drink, whiskey diluted with water will do it good once a day.if a bird will not eat try them with soaked groats or a millet spray.

i've got had my parakeets for about 3 days now and their tails bob too and fluff up (the female does extra effective than the boy). i haven't seen them drink something the two. i think of they only could get used to me and their environment. i think of it many times takes them a pair of week to get used to you. Mine are fearful of me too they fly as much as the astonishing corner as quickly as I open the door. :/
