If you have a PC, then get Picasa by Google...
http://picasa.google.com/
It's a free download and works really well. I organize my pics into folders by date and then occasion (usually in this format YYYY-MM-DD - title... e.g. "2006-10-06 - Fall Family Picnic '06"). This way they are chronologically organized and easy to search through. After that, I burn a copy to DVD (or CD if that's all you have) and store it. Back-ups are very important as your hard drive could go bad.
If you have a Mac then you should have iPhoto and that take care of everything for you.

I think Drives are the best option, cause CDs are quite vulnerable. this is ONLY if the photos are important to you or their very special. Otherwise CDs are the most casual and simple way.
I personally use Drives (any type), cause youve got a less chance of losing them and its more secure.

I prefer cds or dvds to flash drives. Cds and Dvds will last longer and don't lose the data as easily as flash drives.

strongly recommend creating digital albums online at either shutterfly or flickr. both provide great tools and are really easy to share with others. also, you know they're not going to lose your images, always back-up servers in case of problem and offloading them to 3rd party will save lots of space on your hard-drive.
best part, this service is free, where as cds/flash drives are not!
thank me very much :-|

I have macs, and iPhoto is perfect for organizing thousands of pictures. I upload my favorites to Flickr, and every now and then I offload them to DVD for archival purposes.

My Canon program automatically saves them in their dated folder. I copy everything over to cd backup, but leave the pictures saved in my computer.

Adobe Bridge and Lightroom are great programs... you can add keywords and rate your photos. They're pretty nice!
