I just returned from Bangkok about a week and a half ago. We were there for the coup actually.
As for shopping:
I'd recommend MBK (It is similar to a 5 story swap meet)
This is where you will get great deals on everything and a good deal on knock offs. For instance I bought luggage, purses, shoes, and several carvings.
The Siam Paragon is a very upscale mall and BEAUTIFUL. They have tons of places to eat, an oceanarium, and a wonderful kiosk on the food court floor. They have great souveniers. The stores are like Tod's, Kate Spade etc,,
The Siam Paragon is linked with Siam Center (I think thats the name) which is linked with another... let's just say miles of shopping fun.
I loved Central This is a one stop shopping place. Supermarket, department store etc.. Eat at the Food Loft on the top floor. The store is pretty much like all of the department stores here (Macys etc..) They had a Jim Thompson there too (high end silks).
I also went to the Suan-Lum night Bazzar.. this is not to be missed... 3700 stalls with everything you can think of. We were there for about 2 hours and only got thru maybe 200 - 300 stalls.
The clothing is pretty small. If you are a person of size it will be impossible to locate your size there.. but there are tailors. I should add if you are a larger person you will be of great interest and will be noticed everyplace you go.
To see the sites I recommend Diethelm Travel. They have great tour prices (Our tour guide Kaem was excellent) with a wide variety of tour options (We booked all private tours- and did the Rice Barge, Grand Palace and Temple, Traditional Thai Puppetry, Classical Thai Dance and Ayutthaya-by car Tours, I also had these folks handle our transport to and from the airport)
I went to do the comprehensive checkup at Bumrungrad Hospital and it is by far the best hospital I have ever been to.
We stayed at a serviced apartment Bumrungrad Hospitality Suites - There are many other serviced apartments in Bangkok with the same sort of services.
Have a GREAT TIME!

MBK (Mah Boon Kong), near National Stadium BTS Station. Shopping centre, multi floors, almost anything here - pirated DVDs, computer software and games, fashion clothes and accessories. Also has a movie theatre, food court and many restaurants. Near to Siam Discovery, Siam Paragon and Central World - but these are 'up market' shopping malls.
Pratunam (near MBK) - wholesale market for fashion goods. Great prices here.
Chatuchak Weekend Market, as the name suggests, weekends only! Alight at Chatuchak MRT Station, or Mo Chit BTS Station. Again, almost anything here!
Visit the Suan Lum Night Bazaar (alight at Suan Lum MRT Station) - a night version of Chaktuchak, better quality and price too :-) There's a food court with a stage for entertainment, great for tired feets!
There are night markets in most major shopping centres.
Bargaining is the norm, and is fun! Vendor names a price, you name yours. Walk away if your price is not accepted - vendor will call you back if he/she is interested :-) Advice - once you brought an item, never check the price again at the next stall. You'll be heart-broken to find out that you actually can get a better deal :-)
Happy shopping!

Pat pong market is a great place to shop, but there are many markets that are good. Yes the clothes do run smaller than they are here so don't go by the size on the tag. You should bargain a lot. The more my husband bargained the more they smiled it seemed. I was embarrassed by we all went away happy so I guess it was OK>
