why don't you count EVERY single sand granule on EVERY single beach, lake, river etc across the world...?

...that may give you an idea!

The sand analogy is a good one, there are certainly a lot of images and websites out there, perhaps to many to count. In terms of a finite number you have to realize that each day the number of websites and images continually grows. There is however an art project that is going on in which IP addresses are being pinged everyday so as to create a visualisation of what the web looks like. In laymen terms basically a little computer program goes out onto the web and knocks on the door of every known website and sees if anything exists or not, if it exists it is represented as a pixel on this website..although beit more complicated than that

A search on google for just the word "images" alone(http://images.google.ca/images?q=images&hl=en) gives a return of 13,700,000. The total number of images would be astronomical in size.
