We tried getting into Marquee, Bungalow 8 and Pink Pigs (i think)...all of it were reservations only...and with a VIP list...unless I'm ready to shed $800!

Im not from New York hence could you tell me if that's really how it is.

i work in clubs in manhattan.

if you call the club (or clubs) you would like to go to earlier in the day and request reduced admission or comp list then you have a better chance of getting in later that night...many places require that you buy a bottle of liquor for your table...usually very over priced... you can avoid this cost by not reserving a table and drinking at the bar.....dress sharp and wear good shoes! doorman always check out your shoes. also for men a hat usually works like a charm to get into the door.....many times there is a line outside....if you have called ahead do not get in line...walk up to the doorman and say hello! i am on the list plus one......if they don't let you in immediately hang out you will eventually get in.....another good way to get in is to arrive early-you are more likely to get in if there are fewer people waiting outside to get in ...if you take a car service instead of a yellow cab, the cars are nicer and it looks good getting out of a lincoln towncar! avoid peak times 12 to 2 and be nice!
good luck!

The more popular and exclusive a club is, the more you need to be on the "list" to get in. These places are often very selective as to who gains access.

If you dress better you get in free. There are lots of clubs for normal people. I didn't think people still went out in New York though -- its kind of lame -- everything moved to brooklyn.
