Can we just post this as a standing question with the correct answer at the opening screen of aviation? Been asked a 1000 times.
So passengers eyes are adjusted to the light around them in case of an emergency, and in case of an emergency you can see any type of hazard outside where you plan on exiting the aircraft.

You are asked to close the windows, because it keeps costs down for when the plane is being stored. this keeps the sun from beaming in through the windows and heating up the plane's cabin. To fight this with the airconditioning, this would cost alot of money, around $50 every 10 minutes! the second thing, is that it the cool air that you retain will keep bacteria from spawning over and over, this is mainly for courtesy of other passengers.

I certainly have never heard a flight attendant ask me to open and close my window, it would certainly mess up the pressurization and make it darn cold in the plane, let alone turn a few passengers blue. I think you must be referring to the window shades, well at least I hope you are, or I am not flying on that airline !!!

It has nothing to do with pressurization, heating, or cooling!!!
It is simply a courtesy so that other passengers can watch movies or sleep more easily.

I know that during take-off and landing it is so you are orientated to which way is up in case of an emergency, also so you are aware of your surroundings.

Are you talkin for small aircraft? If yes, I would say for heating and cooling purposes and/or pressurization. Or at least a little more pressurization.
