Gates was very close but, an Academy can be either high school or college aged students. Usually it is academic specialized, meaning-'Christian Academy' or 'Military Academy'. Now, the difference in University if compared to a College would be the size! More students, teachers, professors, available academics etc..
Faculty comes from the Latin word Facultas meaning 'Power'. If you look in your Webster it will give you a better understanding.
These are just simplistic meanings for what your looking for, but, I sure hope they help.

Academy is like High School - teenagers
University is after High School - young adult - this is where you get your "degree"
Faculty - that's the teachers and staff at the Academy or University.

Semantics. A college or school is a regulated organization that must be licensed by the state. A conservatory may not have to go through that process. Just like a tutor doesn't have to get a license to teach or have a credential. And, as pointed out, they don't have "core" or "solid" subjects. There are not math, history, science requirements or courses. All courses are music related. A conservatory can't award a degree in the common sense, although some conservatories are affiliated with accredited schools and their courses are accredited, therefore you can go to the affiliate school and take your "required" courses to get a BA with a Music Major. Since a conservatory, by and large, is not regulated as a whole, they don't have to file a syllabus, require a text from an approved source list nor regulate who can teach and what their credentials are. The same applies to workshops, study centers and learning centers. The words "teacher, school, college, university, professor" are all regulated by government and, like a doctor, you must pass a test, meet requirements, pay a fee and display a license at your place of business.
