apply for legal status. Yes they are coming from a communist country, but they want to come here to better their lives and send money to the family they left behind in Cuba. Aren't the Mexican's doing the same?

This is in response to Frankie59:
How do we know that the Cubans coming here are not criminals? Does the Immigration Dept. know this? Do you know this? Why do people always assume Mexicans are lazy, drug dealers and welfare receipients? Maybe you just happen to have delt with one Mexican who did all this and now you are stereotyping all Mexican's.

You're right! Cuba is no worst than a lot of places in Latin America in terms of human rights, they just happen to be communist. But most Cubans in Miami are Republicans and the original ones who came here in the 1960 were wealthy and white. So that answers your question.

Mexico is not a communist dictatorship. The agreement to permit all Cubans to stay here (amnesty) has been the law for a long time (since Carter was president) and seems not to be an economic problem for us. The Cubans who come here work hard, commit few crimes, are family oriented, and contribute to the community. We stopped sorting immigrants by how much they could benefit our country (hard working, literate, with marketable skills and non criminals) in favor of the current system where being a criminal, stealing and dealing drugs committing crime etc in California TX and Arizona have become a way of life. This was due to Kennedy legislation (Teddy) changing the values for immigrants seeking to come here into a lottery where skills, criminal history etc did not matter. Too many of the immigrants coming in before this were hard working contributors who voted Republican. In legislation written by Kennedy and signed by Johnson all this was changed.

Since 9/11, I think our security is more important than that ignorant 'wet foot, dry foot' law. Homeland Security needs to put a stop to that one. IMHO. It's still illegal as far as "I'm" concerned, others can disagree, that's ok. They still need to get legal documentation once they get here and pay taxes, etc. Cuban people cannot get here any other way. They can't just get a visa or take a flight out of Cuba. But, their lives are not all that bad in Cuba.

Most certainly they are doing the same things. I personally know some Cubans who have crossed the Mexican border to enter.

If this is true (I don't know beans about Cuban law as it pertains to becoming a citizen), then it seems like something that needs looking into. It doesn't seem fair to enter illegally, and then be able to stay. If that is the case, then technically they aren't entering illegally, are they? I hope someone with true knowledge of this law explains and expands on this subject.

I don't think it's fair. Consider all the countries with oppressive regimes that are not fortunate enough to live close by. Some of those places make Cuba look like Chucky Cheese.

how exactly would a Cuban come here legally? I mean how hoard would it be for them to get a passport or whatever they need to come here legit. I'm against illegal immigration myself, mainly cause it's Illegal... lol! But I wonder how much of a pain in the **** would it be for them to take the legal avenues to get to the US.
