Yes, i know Sugar Ray Leonard won a hotly disputed decision over Marvin Hagler in 1987, but Hagler was aging and slowing down a lot when Ray finally decided to fight him. I think the only reason Ray wanted to fight him then because he saw that Hagler looked ring worn when he fought John"The Beast" Mugabi. Would Ray have beaten Hagler when both men were at their peak? Maybe 4 or 5 years before they actually fought? What do you think?

That's a toughie..... Both were great fighters and had different strengths. If they fought an equal number of times I'd say they would split the bouts.

Ray was owned by the mob his fights with Hearns he really only won one of the three fights with Tommy. All his fights were handpicked...Hagler a few years earlier wanted to fight Leanord but Ray ran from Hagler John The Beast reaslly took a lot outta Hagler but match them up in a year of thier primes I would take Marvelous Marvin Hagler over Ray Leonard and he was not Sugar the only Sugar was Ray Robinson PERIOD

Yes, he would have beaten Hagler. Boxing styles win fights and Leonard had the goods, and for the record it wasn't hotly disputed he won unanimously. Marvin was beaten by a better fighter and if they fought in their prime I'm sure the outcome would be no different.

I think that Leonard would have beat him 4 out of 5 times. Hagler got better as he aged. Leonard was a superior boxer. He moved up in weight for the fight. Both were great and made boxing watchable at the time. Unlike now when it is just an afterthought in sports.

Pancho - Leonard did beat Hagler in his prime.
Marvin Hagler is my favorite fighter of all time, but there is no question that Leonard was just a lot better.
Doesn't matter when they fought, the outcome would have been the same.

I'll go along with you but your premise is wrong. There was only a two yr difference in their ages.
Now, I am not sure Sugar would have fought him because Sugar was calculating in picking his opponents. If they fought again under the same circumstances Hagler would be busier the second time around and Hagler would win a split decision.

Yes but the problem is that these were two great great fighters and on there day either would have beat the other .Suger smooth silky style against thr raw animal power of Hagler ,the were the best and on any given day one would beat the other, who would win the most ,i personally think Hagler

Watch the tape Hagler would have won their only fight if he hadn't given away the first 4 rounds trying to prove he could out box a master boxer. Once he settled down and went back to what he was best at (search and destroy) he was clearly getting the better of Leonard. Sugar Ray took less money in order to get a bigger ring and bigger gloves, so in a way Leonard won in the ring and outside of it. Marvin lost because his ego got in the way. Lewis WTF!!????

First of all, GREAT question. ...And as an avid fan of boxing, here is my view...

Hagler was a very solid fighter. Do I think he could have beaten Lewis though?? Probably not. ...And that's actually saying a lot coming from me, because I could never stand Lewis and his ego.

As for Ray? I think he was one of THE greatest "SKILLED" pound for pound fighters I've ever seen. He was a very smart fighter as well. ...And I've always believed it's more then just muscle that makes a good fighter, it also takes good skill and brain power to devolp a strategy against each indivdual opponet too. ...Just take a look at how Ali defeated Foreman in late rounds (when I think he was NOT the more powerful fighter) or in Tyson's case, he has all the raw power in the world but no brains to be a very skilled fighter with any type of strategy for each fighter he fights, which is why a guy like Buster Douglas ate him up. ...So, in light of all this, I think Hagler was the more powerful fighter and could have taken Ray if both were in their prime, but with Ray's skills I don't think you could ever count him out.

That would have been a great fight, I would have to say that Hagler in his prime would have maybe edged out Leonard, but it could have gone either way.
