I'm surprised that being in a college town, you don't have better, more nutritional dining-out options. Usually, college towns cater to the nutrition-nuts and offer many different options for fast food.
Obviously, order only what is healthy, if you can, and skip what is not, this is all common sense, if you're on a diet, you don't need a large fry and a coke, right?
Another thing to watch for is portion size. The very instant you get your food, decide what an actual serving of certain foods are and place the excess food on the side of your plate immediately- you may want to ask for a box to get the food off of your plate so that you are not tempted to indulge just because it is there. Make yourself aware of what "normal" or standard portions are and stick to them. American restaurants are notorious for giving diners "too much food". Usually, at a dine out place (like TGIFridays, for instance), you can easily eat only half of what they serve and meet your daily requirements throughout other times of the day. Good luck.

Here are a few pretty good fast food options.
Taco Bell:
Spicy chicken Soft Taco. (about 180 calories each)
Original Bean Burrito (about 380 calories, but high in protein)
Any Burger Joint: Grilled chicken sandwich. (Hold the fries. Opt for a while wheat bun if you can)
Wendy's:
Small Chili (220 calories, 330 for the large)
KFC: This whole meal has less than 500 calories
Chicken Breast, remove the skin and only eat the meat.
Mashed Potatoes (no gravy)
Corn on the cob (no butter)
Subway: Anything of their healthy menu really. There is a good verity here.

I usually go to places that have a website. I check the website and look at the menu online. And I decide, ahead of time, what I'm going to eat that night before I even get there - so I won't be tempted. A lot of local and fast food restaurants have their menus posted on menupages.com - so check that out too.

Fast food - Wendy's , get a side salad and a bowl of chili.. you can always opt for a chicken breast sandwich too. Many places have salads available. If you are concerned about the dressing, ask for a lemon and squeeze over the salad with a little oil. Carry some fruit arounds for snacks.

Most menus have little asterisks next to what their healthy dishes are. Check that out. Also be keen to the chicken, fish, salads, soups, etc.

subway is a good place. most of their food is pretty healthy if you don't get cheese or condiments and they also have salads. you can go to fast food places too. this site tells you meals you can get from fast food restaurants that are all under 500 calories: http://diet.ivillage.com/issues/ichoices/0,,84j4,00.html?par=msn%7Cdiet%7Cdf%7Crelated?iv_cobrandRef=msndiet

can you bring your lunch? that would be the best way, and the cheapest. If not, go for salads and use nonfat or low cal dressings.
