I have a golden retriver mix, i think with chow , 4 years old, neutered. I rescude him from the pound almost a year ago so i dont know his history. When i got him he was pretty good with other dogs in the park. he didnt realy play with them, just kept trying to hump them. I yell no and he stops. Then few month ago i rescued a puppy and he changed. when we walk on the leash and he sees any dogs he goes crazy, becomes very aggressive. in the parks he got in few fights. he growls right away when other dogs aproach him. my fix for now is having him muzzled when he is in the park. he still growls but cant hurt anyone. I did 2 6 weeks obidience training and nothing really helped. he has no problem with the new puppy or any human. very friendly and easily submits to even a child. any ideas? thanks

Twelve weeks of obedience training is not very long. I suggest you try a different instructor. Every trainer has different methods and you might get just the right one. Also it is possible that the dog just does not like other dogs. It happens. I would not put him to be with other dogs if is aggressive.

I have a Retriever/Chow Mix, as well, that I rescued 7 years ago. She doesn't particular care for other dogs. However, 3 years ago I got a puppy (Boxer), boy was she unhappy-happy about this new member of the family invading her space. Where ever she went the boxer wanted to be right under her, she would bark, show teeth and snap. I'd take the boxer for a walk, asking the Retriever if she wanted to go, she would walk right beside us. I put them both on leashes and off we'd go. I would still feed her first, let her out first, made her feel like she was the top dog. Until one day I looked up and they were playing together. She's gotten a little better with new animals, but it takes her a while to warm up. What about an training?

He actually could be trying to protect the puppy. It also could be that he is wanting to keep other pets away from you. Adding a pet to a home can be hard on the existing animals. Training was a very good idea. Try taking just him to the park without the puppy and see if he still is aggressive. If not, then you have your answer. If he is, you can try consulting an animal behaviorist.

It sounds like your Goldy is getting very protective of you and the new puppy. He is definitely trying to assert himself as the dominant one in the pack. It will take some time, but you have got to let him know that you are the "leader of the Pack".

Check out the Dog Whisperers web-site for some tips on how to do this.

you just need to take him on more walks and punish him when he goes "crazy"
