I own a Mirro pressure canner, and have used it for 2-3 years. The pressure gauge is a weighted one and has worked fine. This year when canning I noticed that weight didn't "rock" the way it was supposed to when it reached the proper pressure (with the 10 lb. weight on it) so I'm not sure if it is reaching the proper pressure, even though It's been on the stove for a long time. As far as I can tell, the lid still locks well, the vent is clear and not plugged, and the safety plug is fine. I still get steam out of the vent, but without the "rocking"motion, I wonder if the canner is attaining the temperatures needed for cooking low acid foods. Is there a way to tell? I haven't been able to find any thermometers that would be able to tell me the internal temperature while the canner is heating.

I agree with Kitty I canned years ago and never had that problem but I did change my seal and always made sure each piece was well kept like I always feared dropping my pressure weight for fear it would make it off balance or something. I don't know if that's possible but I did think about it.

The weight raises the pressure in the canner. which in turns raises the boiling point. The heat required to boil will be higher than the normal 212F. Maybe not enough heat to boil. Causing lack of steam. Without the lack of steam escaping. The weight won't rock. The weight should rock 2 to 3 times a minute.

Check your rubber gasket... Even if you think it is sealing properly!! They should be replaced annually if you use it alot and they are very cheap!! every other year if not used as often... I actually do mine every three years for I am super frugal... ha ha.

This same thing happened to me and it was my gasket. But I can't say it is what your problem is but worth looking into !

Happy Friday!
