Am a recovering drug addict (alcoholic, same difference) that has been clean of drugs and alcohol for 26 years. I went through the traditional AA program when I first stopped using. The AA program preaches about turning yourself over to your own higher power (god). The problem is I didn't then, nor do I now, believe in any kind of god. So you ask, how have you stayed clean for 26 years? The answer is....I learned quickly that no one, no group, no god is going to simple take away my addiction. You can't do it for your wife, your children, your job, your friends. Bottom line is I had to want it for me, no one else. By the way, if you look at the stats, AA success rate is about 5%, people doing it on their own without AA is roughly about 5%. Interestingly the same.

Since I don't believe in God, I'm not inclined to think God healed me, but I haven't had a drink in over 5 years.

I got worse in AA because of their insistence that I believe in some "Higher Power". I bounced in and out of the rooms for 20 years only managing a few months of sobriety at a time.

I got help for depression which started before I started drinking, read books by Jack Trimpey (RR) and Jim Christopher (SOS). Here are some others:

I also got involved with the SOS (Save OurSelves) yahoo group: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/sossaveourselves/
and several anti-AA yahoo groups in order to deprogram from the AA dogma.

No, none have. Though many probably think that some god did the healing and have some kind of story about it.

If your spouse drinks too much and is an atheist, preaching won't help any. Instead, try this website:
