I know a young woman (about 20 years old) who has been studying in the United States for the past two years and will be returning to her home in Paraguay soon. What would be a good farewell gift for her? (I'd like to give something that she'd find both useful and, if necessary, portable.)

A nice hand bag containing a photo album of pictures of the friends she made and places she liked to go to when she was here, an address book with everyones addresses(include email addresses) in it, maybe some stamps(find out what it would cost to send a letter from there to here at the post office) and stationary. An autograph book is nice and everyone could write a small note to her.

Gift her with something which would allow her to remain in contact with the people she has met here in the States. For example, an address book with all the addresses in it, stationary, stamps(or what would be equivalent for postal fees in her country), a cell phone card with lots of minutes, a photo album with pictures of where she lived/worked/had fun, pictures of people she was in contact frequently.

There are many gifts which are useful especially for students. How about a bed side alarm clock with a pleasant ringing sound. A pen set , a wrist watch , or CD of her favorite music. Choose something nice and which she will use everyday.

What about a laptop carrier/bag? There are some really cute ones at flight001.com. They are really useful - since she's done studying and will be working soon, it ill be very practical and of course designed to be carried everywhere.

I would give her a gift that represents the american culture. This way when she is gone she will have something to remember it buy. I once received a necklace from a girl that was from another country. She explained the background of the necklace and it means so much to me. I learned something about her culture and have something from it to remember. How about making her a friendship braclet. That's something that American's do and she will never forget about you. Make it in red, white, and blue.

A box of cards, addresses, emails, phone numbers of your gang. A framed photo/ photo album/collage of your gang. A mixed CD of current pop hits, or favourite party songs. All of these things in a gift package would be very thoughtful and extremely inexpensive.

Make it a memory of her time with YOU, and not of "America". Please - nothing with a flag on it.

you could get her a writing kit, that would enuaged her to write letter to you and you reply to her.. this way the letters can be read over and over again than emails. but all not to lost.. on necklace.. a photo album for photos or even a photo flame..
