I think that being friends first is the right way to go. You know all about each other, no weird suprises. He knows your parents, and you know his. And you are already comfortable being around each other. You may be afraid to lose his friendship if something happened, but you'll never know unless you try. He might be your solemate or something.
I am currently dating my best friend that i have known for 4 years now, since i we were 11. And I have never been happier. He is already use to taking care for me so it just comes natural to him(if you know what i mean) and I love him so much because I know all his little details.
So don't be afraid, just follow your heart. They say it never lies to you, and I am living proof of that! :^>!!!!!!!!!!!!!

noooo if i were you i would stay friends with the guy coz like ten years of friendship now that's very special Just stay friends it's a better relationship & healthier. And besides there are alot more other guys so ya just be friends in my opinion Good Luck !!!

Let me answer all of your questions on this one question, I think it's very cute, I do think he likes you and he is definately flirting with you and from what you are saying I don't think you need help or advice about flirting you are flirting just fine, be yourself is all I can say, he obviously likes you the way you are so don't over think it, and don't listen to the mean answers on here, they are just jealous and bitter about their own lives and are trying to bring down your happiness.
